Serena Williams covers this year’s coveted September issue of Vogue — the surprising announcement she’s quitting tennis in an article she wrote for the magazine — and her 4-year-old daughter, Olympia Ohanian, managed to get in on the action, holding onto the train of her mother in the beautiful photo.
Dressed in a light blue Balenciaga dress with long tassel earrings, the tennis great poses barefoot on the beach with her hands on the hips for the cover – and when readers open the magazine cover, they’ll find little Olympia in a white dress. , with her face hidden by Mama’s undulating train.
In an Instagram post, Williams, 40, shared her big Vogue moment and some thoughts on the new chapter she’s facing.
“Fashion. Cover of the September issue,” she wrote. “There comes a time in life when we have to decide to go in a different direction. That time is always hard when you love something so much. My goodness, me enjoy tennis. But now the countdown has begun. I need to focus on being a mother, my spiritual goals and finally discovering another but just exciting Serena. I’m going to enjoy these coming weeks.”
In another Instagram post, she shared two other photos from the oceanfront shoot, featuring a beachy crochet Wales Bonner dress in one shot and a sleek white Ralph Lauren Collection dress in another.
It’s no surprise that the Olympic gold medalist — who married Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian in 2017 — let her little one join the Vogue action.
Olympia is a regular on Williams’ Instagram feed, and instead of mentioning her tennis achievements, the proud mom of someone’s bio reads, “I’m Olympia’s mom.”
The focus on her family, the famous athlete says, is the reason she has decided to retire from tennis.
“Believe me, I’ve never wanted to choose between tennis and a family,” she wrote in Vogue. “I don’t think it’s fair. If I were a man I wouldn’t be writing this because I would be playing and winning there while my wife did the physical work to expand our family.”
While they weren’t twins for Vogue, Williams and her daughter often have matching outfits, like the pink Balmain creations they rocked this year at Paris Fashion Week or the David Koma jumpsuits they wore to the “King Richard” premiere. Olympia even owns a pint-sized recreation of one of her famous mom’s tennis outfits.
And while Williams may not play tennis in the future, she told Vogue she’s looking for another baby — so it looks like fans may one day be looking forward to another one to join in for matching moments.
