Kanye West condemns Gap for ‘copying’ Yeezy Gap x Balenciaga designs

Kanye West is arguing with Gap.

On Wednesday, the “Praise God” rapper posted a screenshot to Instagram of a text exchange with a friend, who shared a link to a navy blue T-shirt on Gap’s website and said, “This is Gap copying YGEEB” — referring to Yeezy Gap Engineered by Balenciaga, West’s collaboration with the American clothing giant and luxury fashion label.

“Exactly,” West, 45, replied to his friend.

The Grammy winner made another accusation to Gap with his caption for the post: “But they canceled the photo shoot with my kids in Japan without me knowing.”

Less than 24 hours earlier, West also called the company after reportedly talking about his designs without him.

“Gap held a meeting about me without me?” he captioned a photo of the brand’s new reflective sunglasses on Tuesday, dubbed the YR 3022 YZYGAP SHDZ and recently spotted on Kim Kardashian and the former couple’s daughters.

Likewise, West recently went after Adidas (which handles manufacturing and distribution for his Yeezy brand) for launching Yeezy Day, hiring staff and making design decisions without his input.

West signed a 10-year deal with Gap in 2020 and has since generated a lot of press for the retailer, albeit not always positively; earlier this month, shoppers were outraged to discover that the Yeezy Gap collection was being sold in stores from garbage bags. (West recently urged his Instagram followers to “look at the homeless” as “the greatest inspiration for all design.”)

“The salesperson said Ye got angry when he saw that she… [his clothes] on hangers’ because ‘this is how he wanted it’, a Twitter user sharedand added: “They won’t help you find your size either, you just have to search everything.”

West called himself an “innovator” during a Fox News interview amid the uproar, saying: “I’m not here to sit up and apologize for my ideas. That’s exactly what the media is trying to do: apologize to us for any idea that doesn’t exactly fall under the way they want us to think.”
