Shania Twain never learned to talk about religion at the dinner table while she was out with Oprah Winfrey.
The country pop star, 57, shared on Wednesday’s podcast “Table Manners with Jessie Ware and Lennie Ware” that the divisive topic was making her conversation with the media mogul, 68, “sour.”
“It was great to just sit and have real conversations, but once we started talking about religion, it all went wrong,” said Twain — who didn’t specify when the dinner was — adding that she then told Winfrey, “Let’s stop talking about religion!’”
The man! I Feel Like a Woman’ singer said there were clear differences between her and the former talk show host because Winfrey is “quite religious” and Twain considers herself more “spiritual.”
“I’m not religious in the sense that I’m committed to a religion,” she explained. “I am much more of a spiritual person. I am a seeker.”
Despite their conflicting views, Twain said she was open to conversation, but the subject was simply “out of the question” for Winfrey.
“There was no room for debate, and I like debate,” said the “From This Moment On” singer. “Canadians like to discuss everything. So I’m like, ‘Oh, okay. It’s time to change the subject.’”
A representative for Winfrey did not immediately respond to Vidak For Congress’s request for comment on Twain’s claims.
In an interview with AARP Bulletin in 2015, Oprah magazine’s founder, who grew up as a Baptist, talked about her relationship with her faith and how she views people from different backgrounds.
“If I lived in a world that didn’t include other people who aren’t Christians, that would be the opposite of Christianity,” she said at the time. “I can’t define ‘God’ so being open to the mystical and mystery of God is a natural part of myself.
She added: “So people criticize me for not being what they are, and I say it works for me and has worked for me and continues to work for me, in a way that fills me with a sense of peace and contentment.” about what God means to me.”
Although Winfrey and Twain had a bump in the road during that dinner, that didn’t stop the two women from working together.
The “You’re Still the One” singer has appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and she also starred in her own reality show on Winfrey’s OWN network called “Why Not? with Shania Twain.”
