“Success” creator Jesse Armstrong rejected King Charles III Monday night in his acceptance speech for the best drama series at the 2022 Emmys.
“Great week for follow-ups. New king in the UK…for us,” the UK resident said before a star-studded audience at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
“Um, apparently our victory involved a little more votes than Prince Charles,” he continued, acknowledging the Television Academy votes that earned his team a gold statuette.
As cheers and cheers filled the room, Armstrong added, “I’m not saying we’re any more legitimate in our position than he is. We leave that to others.”
He then went on to talk royally and applaud those involved in the success of his HBO series. “We are incredibly grateful for this honor,” Armstrong said. “This group is extraordinary. It’s a team effort.”
Emmy’s viewers had mixed feelings about his dig at Charles.
“Winning Best Drama and making a joke about the royal succession on national TV is quite a choice,” one person tweeted, while another repeated, “biting the royal family succession during Succession’s best drama speech, I cringe.”
Meanwhile, some fans seemed amused.
“Why is the guy who accepts the award for succession looking for enemies in the royal family omgndjsksmddjj,” one person wrote.

Charles, 73, was officially proclaimed the reigning monarch of the UK and Commonwealth on Saturday morning – just days after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, at the age of 96.
His Majesty’s bipartisan accession council took place at the State Apartments of St. James’ Palace in London.
“I know how deeply you and the whole nation feel and I think I can say that the whole world sympathizes with me in the irreparable loss we have all suffered,” the king said in part.
‘My mother’s reign was unparalleled in duration, dedication and devotion. Even as we mourn, we give thanks for this very faithful life. I am well aware of this great legacy and of the duties and heavy responsibilities of sovereignty that have now passed to me.”
