Meghan Markle — and her “Archetype” podcast listeners — “started to sweat” after Mariah Carey accused the Duchess of Sussex of “diva moments” on Tuesday’s episode.
When Markle, 41, told her guest she didn’t personally “connect” with the “diva… persona,” Carey, 53, interrupted.
“You give us diva moments sometimes, Meghan,” said the singer. “Do not pretend” [you don’t].”
The alum “Suits” seemed nervous and asked, “What kind of diva moments have I given you?”
Carey then clarified that she is Markle’s ‘visual'[s]and not her personality, saying she “meant nothing” with the comment and “played around” with the former actress.
Markle expressed her relief after the interview ended.
“She must have sensed my nervous laugh, and…she jumped right in to make sure I was crystal clear that when she said diva she was talking about the way I dress, the attitude, the clothes she explained.
“She meant diva as a compliment, but I heard it as a dig,” the duchess continued. “At the time, as she explained to me, she meant it as chic, as inspiring.”
Before Carey set the record straight, Markle had admitted to “wrunging his way in.” [her] seat in it [a] silent revolt” against the accusation.
“[The conversation] all went well, very well, until that moment happened,” she recalled. “It stopped me in my tracks. … My mind was just genuinely concerned with what nonsense she would have read or clicked on to make her say that.”
Markle explained: “I kept thinking in that moment: is my crush on a girl going to end soon? Does she really not see me?”
Earlier in the episode, the author of “Bench” told Carey how important the Grammy winner’s career was to her as she grew up biracial.
“You were so formative for me,” gushed Markle, who launched her podcast earlier this month with guest Serena Williams.
“Representation is so important,” she added. “When you came on the scene, [I was like]’Oh my god, someone looks like me.’”
