Just call her Ant-Woman!
Lupita Nyong’o appears to be competing for the fictional Marvel role by consuming ant-covered fruit.
“They’re ants!” the actress, 39, said excitedly in an Instagram video Thursday as she showed off a slice of mango sprinkled with dozens of black creepy crawlies.
“It’s really good!” she said after taking a rather large bite. “It’s not even crunchy or anything.”
The “Black Panther” star let out a satisfied “mmm” after tossing out the rest of the insect-adorned food.
“You can call me Ant-Woman!! #Marvel #Ants #Foodie,” she cheekily captioned the clip, which showed her holding a glass of champagne in her other hand.
In the background of her video – shot in Los Angeles on the opening night of a three-day dinner series featuring dishes from world-renowned restaurant Noma in Copenhagen, Denmark – people could be heard discussing the culinary delicacy.
“Yeah, I often eat those with crickets,” one man told an off-camera woman before asking if the ants were “smoked.”
The woman replied that she wasn’t sure how the insects were prepared, but noted that they were “intended to add a citrus note” to the food.
Still, the post caused many of Nyong’o’s followers to lose their appetites.
“What are you doing baybeh [sic]…what do you eat ants fohhh [sic]?!” Winston Duke, her ‘Us’ co-star, wrote. “This irritates me … I feel grumpy … what would your aunt say … my antenna is going crazy … .”
But a second follower commented, “Noooooooo. I’m itching now. .”
“On purpose???” a third critic wondered. “I definitely would have assumed the waiter dropped mine and I would have asked for a new one…maybe I’m not coming out enough – but at least YOU look great lol.”
Nyong’o was indeed dressed to perfection in a bubblegum pink one-shoulder trouser suit, which she delivered with tiny earrings.
While the Oscar winner’s unusual snack didn’t necessarily whet an appetite among her fans, it was certainly enjoyed for a good cause.
The star-studded gala event was in partnership with luxury car company Audi and non-profit organization MAD, which “inspires and empowers the global hospitality industry to create sustainable change and transform food systems for the future.”
