“Realizing the potential PR damage a gay sex story would have on the perfect Scientology couple John and Kelly [Preston, Travolta’s then wife, who passed away in 2020]we dug up the sources and threatened the media with lawsuits,” Rinder writes.

Rinder, the Australian-born co-host of “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath,” writes that the church does not claim to be anti-gay, “but the threat of a story describing a Scientologist as gay would cause internal panic because for to a Scientologist, not being ‘cured’ from homosexuality would indicate that the technology is not working.”

In the book, Rinder also writes about Travolta (above with Samuel L. Jackson in "Pulp Fiction") That "the threat of a story describing a Scientologist as gay would cause panic" within the church.

Rinder also writes, “Much has been made about John’s sexuality and whatever the reality of his sexual orientation may be, I firmly believe he would be more open about it were it not for the fact that he experiences a stigma because of his strong belief in Scientology.”

A Scientology spokesperson told Vidak For Congress: “Mike Rinder is an inveterate liar who tries to take advantage of his dishonesty… He supports himself by orchestrating the intimidation of his former church and its leader through false police reports, inflammatory propaganda and fraudulent media stories. ”

Rinder describes his decades in the Church of Scientology in “A Billion Years.”

Travolta’s wife, Preston, died of breast cancer in 2020. She was 57. The couple shared three children, son Jett, who died in 2009 at the age of 16; daughter Ella, 22; and son Benjamin, 11.
