Scarlett Johansson admits there was very little method for her and Colin Jost’s madness when they came up with son Cosmo’s name.
“[We] threw a bunch of letters together,” the 37-year-old “Avengers” star said during her appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” on Monday.
“I just thought it was charming and our friends liked it.”
While she and Jost, 40, loved the nickname, Johansson said it took a bit of persuasion to get her mother-in-law, Kerry Kelly, on board with it.
“Colin’s mom had a little more trouble with it,” she said. “She suggested other versions of it for a while.”
She added: “I thought, ‘He’s already here. He’s gone. Like, it’s over that time.’”
The ‘Black Widow’ star, who also shares daughter Rose with ex-husband Romain Dauraic, said her 8-year-old was also a fan of the unique name.
“Cosmo is a really sweet little flower that comes in different shades of orange and yellow and things like that,” said Johansson. “That’s why my daughter liked it too.”
Last October, Jost addressed his mother’s reaction to his son’s name during a performance in ‘Late Night With Seth Myers’.
“After three or four days she would say, ‘Cosmo? Is it final? Did you submit the birth certificate?’ We were like, ‘Oh yeah, we did that in the hospital,’ he said.
“She says, ‘Okay. Interesting. Because I read that there is also a name, Cosimo, with an ‘I’. So that could also be an option. Maybe you call him Cosimo, that’s his real name, and you could still call him Cosmo?” the comedian recalls.
The New York resident said his mother consulted other members “of the Italian community” before finally approving the name.
“She lives on Staten Island. Eventually, she started meeting different members of the Italian community who have many Cosmo relatives,” said the “SNL” star.
“And so she called and said, ‘I’ve met someone. They said their uncle’s name is Cosmo, so that’s okay.’”
Johansson and Jost, who got engaged in 2019 after dating for two years, finally said ‘I do’ in 2020. They announced the birth of their son in August 2021 after keeping the pregnancy a secret.
“Scarlett is pregnant but keeps it very quiet,” an insider told Vidak For Congress at the time. “She has kept a very low profile.”
