Kendall Jenner isn’t afraid to let it all hang.
The reality star has been the highest-paid model in the style industry in recent years, but she wasn’t always well known.
In 2014, she walked her first high-fashion runway for Marc Jacobs — dressed in a sheer, nipple-bared sweater that caused quite the stir.
“I remember getting a call from my agent saying Marc and Katie [Grand, the show’s stylist] wanted to put me in this kind of sheer top, and I was like, ‘I’m a game. I do not mind. I’m totally fine with the nipple,” Jenner, 26, told Vogue for the magazine’s “Life in Looks” video series.
“I was pretty chill even though my boobs were out,” she added. “It didn’t make me any more nervous. I was really like, ‘Dope, whatever they want, it’s their vision, let’s do it.’ So I was completely at ease.”
The catwalker recalled that even though she was getting walking lessons from her agency before the big night, she still ended up on the runway “very stiff” — but had no pre-show jitters.
“I actually couldn’t believe I was there. Oddly enough, I wasn’t very nervous, and I think it was because my shoes were relatively flat—they weren’t big, high heels,” Jenner said.
But the founder of 818 Tequila wasn’t always so confident; she also looked back at her first Met Gala appearance that same year, for which she wore a mermaid-style Topshop dress.
“I look at it now and I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, I look like a baby,’ but I felt like a woman,” she said of the look.
“I used [sister] Kim [Kardashian]’s hair and makeup people so… I [felt] Like it [I was] I embrace this feminine side of me, and it’s so funny to look back at this moment and think, ‘Oh my god, you were such a kid then.’”
Jenner added that she was “definitely very nervous” because she only knew Kim and then-husband Kanye West at the event, who were both watching her all night.
Today, the Met Gala is packed with Kardashian-Jenners, whom Kendall called “the best thing ever.”
She has found her confidence as her personal style has evolved as well.
“I look back at even the first little girl we saw and how uncomfortable she felt. And even the girl in 2014 at the Met Gala,” she said. “And then getting into this girl who’s much more, ‘I’ve found myself as a woman, I’ve found myself’… It’s cool to see.”
