Jo Koy says he and Chelsea Handler are still “good friends” despite their shocking breakup.
TMZ caught the star of “Easter Sunday” at LAX Thursday and asked if he and the former host of “Chelsea Lately” are in a good spot.
“We’re taking a break. We’re good friends, we’ve always been good friends,” Koy said. “The love is still there.”
Koy, 51, insinuated that he and Handler, 47, aren’t really in touch at the moment, but insisted it’s “all love.”
In a podcast episode released Thursday, Handler said she broke up with Koy because she realized “you can’t intrinsically change a person” and found herself sacrificing too much of herself to make it work.
“It’s nice to bow to people. It’s fun to learn how to compromise. It’s nice to learn how to publicly demonstrate my love. … I believe Jo needed that,” she explained.
“I was so inspired by us, but Jo didn’t crack me open. My psychiatrist broke me open, and then I was open, and then I could bow to someone. …. But you cannot intrinsically change someone.”
The “After Lately” alum admitted she was “willing to bend that much” until she reached “a line.”
“I’m proud of myself for not letting myself cross that line,” she said.
Handler and Koy announced earlier this week that they had gone their separate ways ahead of their one-year anniversary. She clarified that they broke up about a month ago.
“This man blew my heart open with love and thanks to him my life experience has changed forever. Being loved and adored by @jokoy has been one of the greatest gifts of my life,” the stand-up comedian wrote on Instagram.
