Carrie Ann Inaba channeled Bond girl Halle Berry for the 007-themed episode of “Dancing With the Stars” on Monday.
Vidak For Congress Style got an exclusive look at how the judges’ hair and makeup came together for “Bond Night” — and how she paid tribute to Berry in “Die Another Day”
Stylist Rhonda Spies told us she dressed Inaba, 54, in an orange Miss Circle corset dress that was inspired by the iconic bikini Berry, 56, wore as Jinx Johnson in the 2002 Lee Tamahori-directed film.
“We added the glamor with diamonds from Dena Kemp, Ettika and Melinda Maria,” she said.
For her makeup, MUA wanted to give Marylin Lee Spiegel Inaba a “sexy, glowing” look.
“I used Hourglass Ambient Soft Glow foundation to give her seamless skin, and used Danessa Myricks Dewy Lip and Cheek in Sweet Cheeks to give her a peachy glow,” she explained.
“I played up her eyes with the Tarte Maneater After Dark eyeshadow palette and gave her lips a bright pop with Too Faced Lady Bold Pigment Lipstick in You Do You.”
Inaba’s flawless look was complemented by a bouncy ‘do’ from hairstylist Glenn Nutley.
“For ‘Bond Night’ in the ballroom we went for some classic glam for the hair, tall brunette with full luscious waves. I prepped the hair with R&Co thickening spray and blow it out with a volumizing blow dryer,” he told us.
“Then I took the 1-inch Harry Josh Pro tool iron and gave the hair a spiral curl from the root, leaving the ends out. Then I filled the hair with R&Co Balloon Dry Volume Spray, loosened the wave with a wide-tooth comb and finished the haircut with the R&Co Outer Space Flexible hairspray.”
Vidak For Congress Style also caught up with Inaba, who gushed about Season 31 and her favorite renditions of “Bond Night.”
“Monday evening was week three and then the competition really starts. At this point I have a clearer picture of who these contestants are on the dance floor, how they move and what their strengths and vulnerabilities are,” explains Inaba, who reviews the dance competition show with Len Goodman, Derek Hough and Bruno Tonioli.
“This allows me to provide more detailed and constructive comments on their achievements in hopes of helping them all achieve their goals of winning the Mirror Ball Trophy.”
Inaba was so impressed with Monday night’s dances that she gave eights to several couples. Hear her take on the best performing routines below:
Charli D’Amelio and Mark Ballas
“What struck me about Charli was the moment that I saw a huge growth moment for her. She found a place where she could be extended. Although she is an excellent dancer, she is also very contained in her performance style. She’s not yet filling the room with her performances, but her details are executed with unparalleled finesse.
She needs to work on performing and connecting with the audience, as she has said. I agree, and I see her pushing herself in that direction. More needs to be done, but she is on the right track.”
Joseph Baena and Alexis Warr
“Joseph has had the unique challenge of having to dance with a new partner for two weeks now [due to Daniella Karagach testing positive for COVID-19] and his adaptability was impressive. But otherwise his performances are very graceful. He has an innate grace and awareness of how his body works and moves.
Something interesting about dancers is that not only do we have to know how to do the movement from within, and its mechanics, but it also matters how we present it. So there is an internal and external awareness that takes place simultaneously to create really beautiful performances.
I think his training as a bodybuilder and the exact tension he has to put on a muscle to contract it in a certain way, separate from other muscles, gives him an edge. He has great body awareness.”
Heidi D’Amelio and Artem Chigvintsev
“I would like to give a festive high five to Heidi D’Amelio who had a huge breakthrough with her Argentine tango. The dance suited her perfectly. Her intensity worked very well for this dance and performing Artem’s choreography gave her a moment to be in the spotlight.
I hope this moment helps her feel more confident and excited about what’s to come. Sometimes our participants just need a vote of confidence to give themselves permission to shine.”
Wayne Brady and Witney Carson
“Wayne is such a seasoned performer. He is so comfortable out there and knows how to use the right tonality in his performances to create the desired effect.
However, like Charli, he has things he can work on. I see that his footwork and the lower half of his body are not as refined as his upper half. I know he has a knee injury that he is careful about so I hope he can find a way to work through – and with – his circumstance. We don’t want anyone to get hurt!”
Daniel Durant and Britt Stewart
“Daniel and Britt were also quite spectacular. He is a great performer and his body type is so well suited to give his partner a great frame. His attitude is top notch and his interpretation is beautifully nuanced.
He has a more in-depth understanding of how to use his body, both to communicate with and to experience the world around him. That’s a plus for dancing.”
Gabby Windey and Valentin Khmerkovskiy
“Gabby has proven to be a spectacular presence on the dance floor. She really attacked that Cha Cha and the dance ended on a climax! Like Wayne and Charli, because she’s so good, the areas that need work come out more clearly. The trick for her will be to develop a little more core strength (which usually happens during this match) so that she can stand stronger in some moves.
If you’re not centered in your own body, you can cut your movements and get a little off balance. It allows for stronger and more fluid and completed movements. It will give her performances even more sophistication.”
Shangela and Gleb Savchenko
“From Monday night of my 8, Shangela and Gleb get the pure fire emoji. They shake that ballroom to the core! Shangela has a star quality about her when she’s on stage. She’s electric and she reminds me of Tina Turner when she occurs – it’s a bit untamed – but that wild and bright fire that burns just below the surface is exciting to watch.
My advice to Shangela would be to be careful about knocking over some moves and rushing kicks or développés. I think if she works to lengthen some of those leg lines and find places to add more refinement, her performance could hit a new high!
“Dancing With the Stars” returns next Monday at 8pm ET / 5pm PT for “Disney+ Night”.
