One Cher is all it takes.
The Goddess of Pop shut down a fan who compared Dua Lipa to her in a cheeky tweet on Tuesday.
“Dua Lipa, the Cher of our generation,” the Twitter user wrote along with a video of the “Levitating” singer, 27, at last year’s Grammy Awards.
But Cher, 76, seemed to disagree, respond with her own tweet“How many years are there in a generation?”
Several netizens dug in their own opinion on the “Cher” comparison.
“Not true. I’m a millennial and it will always be Cher to me,” someone disagreed.
“Cher is for boomers/gen X,” wrote another, adding, “Dua Lipa is for millennials/gen Z.”
“One thing is being *inspired* by someone, and another is being a substitute. Dua is the Dua Lipa of our generation. Cher is Cher. There is no need to compare two completely different individuals in talent, just because one dresses like the other,” explains a third.
“People don’t really understand the cultural impact Cher had. Anyone can dress like Cher these days, but it’s not the same as being the first to break that ground. That was Cher. Cher also starred in movies and her own TV show. She’s the one and only,” agrees a third fan.
It’s no secret that Lipa has mirrored several of Cher’s iconic looks over the years.
The “Don’t Start Now” singer famously wore a skimpy Versace butterfly dress to the 2021 Grammys, drawing comparisons to the flashy butterfly-themed dress that Cher rocked at the 1974 show.
Lipa also channeled her inner Goddess of Pop at a 2018 performance in Paris by donning Cher’s iconic Bob Mackie nude gown, adorned with feathers, which the “Believe” singer wore to the 1974 Met Gala.
And in the same vein, both superstars have teamed up with Versace. Lipa was named the face of the Italian fashion house by Paper Magazine in June 2021.
Meanwhile, Cher teamed up with Versace to create her own line, called Chersace, this summer for Pride 2022.
