Marilyn, is that you?
Ana de Armas disappears in the role of Marilyn Monroe in Netflix’s first trailer for “Blonde”, which appeared on Thursday.
The NC-17 biopic, based on Joyce Carol Oates’ bestseller, will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in 2022 and begin streaming on September 28.
Over the course of the roughly two-minute clip, de Armas channels the iconic Hollywood bombshell in some of her most iconic fashion looks, from her pink “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” dress to her wind-blown white halter dress from “The Seven Year Itch.” .”
Costume designer Jennifer Johnson (who previously worked on ‘I, Tonya’ and ‘Beginners’) also perfects Monroe’s tie-front ‘Niagara’ dress and her sheer sequined ‘Some Like It Hot’ dress, among other unforgettable outfits, perfectly recreated.
“Marian doesn’t exist. When I come out of my dressing room, I’m Norma Jeane,” de Armas says in the trailer. “I’m still her when the camera rolls. Marilyn Monroe only exists on screen.”
While the 34-year-old “Knives Out” breakout star didn’t actually have to go blonde for “Blonde,” the role did require a bald cap.
“I had to go bald every day because with the blonde wigs… [Monroe] went through different shades of blonde, from gold to real platinum, so for these wigs that are beautifully made, you can’t have anything dark underneath,” the brunette beauty told Byrdie in 2021.
“It was like, three and a half hours of makeup every day. I think I actually cried when I first saw it [the wigs] On. Probably because I was terrified.”
