Amber Heard’s sister, Whitney Heard, was angry with MTV for including Johnny Depp in their Video Music Awards broadcast on Sunday night.
“@MTV You are disgusting and clearly desperate!” Whitney, 34, wrote on her Instagram Story. “I really hope none of the people who made this call have daughters.”
Amber’s younger sibling has added the hashtags “#DVMAS” and “#IStandWithAmberHeard”.
Depp’s VMA’s appearance came more than two months after he won his defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber, 36.
The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star, 59, walked out of the legal battle relatively unscathed, although several damning allegations were leveled against him.
Amber claimed during her testimony that Depp beat and threatened to kill her when he abused drugs and alcohol. She also accused him of berating her for her interactions with her former co-star James Franco.
Depp vehemently denied all claims of abuse since Amber first made her allegations.
After the trial, the actor said he felt “calm” and “overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and the colossal support and kindness from around the world.”
During Sunday’s show, Depp appeared via a hologram dressed as the iconic silver astronaut figurine that rewards winners at the VMAs. He joked, “Hey, you know what? I needed the work.” MTV’s decision to include him was met with mixed reactions.
Like Whitney, journalist Alex Suskind was rejected. “Johnny Depp appearing at the VMAs for funny cameos is really f–king gross,” Suskind tweeted.
However, others on social media applauded the network for giving Depp the opportunity.
“Johnny Depp said ‘Hey I needed the job’ was pretty funny but you have to have a good read of the Depp drama to know what it’s about,” one person tweeted. “That said, kudos to the #VMAs for giving a vilified man a chance to be back in the spotlight.”
During another part of the show, Depp again joked about being out of a job. “I want you to know that I am available for birthdays, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, weddings, vigils,” he said. “Every old thing you need.”
But Depp seems to be doing just fine.
Aside from his VMA appearance, Depp will direct a film about Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani and co-produce the film with Al Pacino and Barry Navidi.
According to TMZ, he also signed a multi-year seven-figure deal to continue appearing as the famous face of Dior’s best-selling Sauvage cologne.
