Tiffany Haddish revealed that she once turned down a multi-million dollar payday because the content of the offer “made her feel like she was st.”
“I turned down, s–t, I turned down $10 million just to post because it didn’t represent my brand,” she told Cosmopolitan in a cover story published Thursday.
“I turned down $10 million because my soul is worth more than that to me. My spirit, my integrity, how I want to look at myself in the mirror every day,” she continued.
The “Girls Trip” star admitted she’d “rather be broke” accepting money that doesn’t appeal to her character.
Haddish, 42, said her mindset has extended to her big screen career as well.
“In the beginning with acting roles, I was just like, ‘What seems like fun?’ Now it’s, ‘What seems fun and what resonates with my soul?’” she explained.
“Then I ask, who else is working on it? Will it be my friends? However, what I’ve noticed lately is that the casting comes to me first. So I’ve also learned how to fight better.”
The “Night School” star said it was still a “battle” to get the people she wants into projects, despite “producing stuff, being nominated for awards, [and] won trophies.”
“I kinda know what I’m doing,” she said. ‘Give me a chance to make you richer, sir. I may not know how to keep a man, but I do know how to make some money.”
The stand-up comedian also explained the importance of saying “no” to certain offers.
“I love and hate telling people no,” she said. “I love it because it’s for me – I have to take care of Tiffany. I hate it because nine times out of ten the one who asks me is someone I probably really love and care about.
“If a friend wants me to do a show or something like that, I have to be honest… you just have to be selfish in a way, and I hate that feeling of being selfish, but I love the results.”
