Willow Smith Says Shaving Head Was ‘The Most Radical Thing’

Willow Smith no longer whips her hair back and forth — for good reason.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s 21-year-old daughter shared her hair journey in a new interview with Glamor UK.

“I like to see a sparkle on my scalp, a reflection of light,” explained the “Purge” rocker, who has been practicing the ‘do’ for years.

“Shaving my head is perhaps the most radical thing I’ve done in the name of beauty.”

Willow explained that “as a black woman there were many layers” in her relationship with her hair and skin growing up.

“However I feel, I like doing that,” she added, trying out different hairstyles.

“I don’t really like to think about it. I like to be free with it. I think it’s radical to be myself sometimes.”

In July 2020, Willow famously shaved her head onstage while performing “Whip My Hair” at a Facebook Live event promoting her fourth album. “I always shave my head at monumental moments in my life, when things really change. And this is definitely one of those moments,” Willow shared in a behind-the-scenes clip.

In March of the same year, the “Meet Me At Our Spot” singer shaved her head during a performance artwork called “The Anxiety.” At the time, Willow invited people to observe her and spent 24 hours in a glass room at the Geffen Contemporary at the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles.

For her part, Willow’s mother, Pinkett Smith, has been very vocal about her battle with alopecia over the years, long before it came to a head at the Oscars, when Will hit Chris Rock onstage for a joke about it.

The “Girls Trip” actress was inspired by the “Emo Girl” singer to debut her own new buzzcut in July 2021. “Willow made me do it because it was time to let go,” she captioned her Instagram account. message about the ‘do.
