Whoopi Goldberg wasted no time on the season premiere of “The View,” hitting back at the racist criticism of HBO’s “House of the Dragon” and Amazon’s “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.”
Now that the two new fantasy series have made their mark and become hits, some fans — or wannabe critics — are claiming that the creators were “too awake” adding different characters.
Amazon introduced new racially diverse characters to the series, and some fans claimed that JRR Tolkien had no intention of populating Middle-earth with diverse creatures — despite Tolkien describing Harfoots as having “brown skin.”
goldberg, 66, responded to the discoursestarting with an admission that the worlds of the two fantasy shows “are not real” and “there are no dragons, there are no hobbits.”
“Are you going to tell me black people can’t be fake people either?” she said. ‘I don’t know if there’s a hobbit club, I don’t know if there will be protests. But people: what is wrong with all of you?”
Goldberg’s co-hosts agreed, they all agreed on the subject.
“What I find fascinating is that dragons are okay, fire-breathing dragons, and people with white hair who are born this way when they are little, and violet eyes, but the black people in them are just a bridge too far for these people,” said Sunny Hostin, 53.
Newcomer Alyssa Farah Griffin, 33, said the people making these comments “must have a hobby.”
“It’s just racist. Call it what it is,” Joy Behar, 79, added.
Goldberg linked the reaction to these big names with what she thinks will eventually happen with the new live-action movie “The Little Mermaid” starring Halle Berry.
“You’ll go crazy when you see the new Ariel. Because you know… there are many communities of mermaids of different colors,” she said. And when I say ‘of different colors’ I’m not playing. There are violet mermaids, there are pink mermaids, there are black mermaids, there are Latina mermaids, there are mermaids of all kinds. And do you know why that because it is the world we would like to see better.”
The response to the casting in “The Rings of Power” was so bad that Amazon had to suspend user reviews for the first 72 hours due to the series’ “review bombardment”.
‘All of you who have problems because there are black hobbits? Find work!” she said. “Find work! Look for yourself, because you are focused on the wrong things.
