Whoopi Goldberg was once involved in a “farting war” on the rise with Robin Williams and Billy Crystal, according to her granddaughter.
Amara Skye Dean shared her “favorite” story of the “View” co-host, 66, on Entertainment Weekly’s clip of “Claim to Fame” on Monday.
The story was about Williams, who died in 2014 at age 65, and his 74-year-old co-star for “Father’s Day.”
“[She]Robin Williams and Billy Crystal [were] while he was in an elevator and Robin Williams was just ruining his life,” Dean explained. “I think they were Dutch-oven each other, just basking in the atmosphere of farts.”
She added that Goldberg, whose real name is Caryn Johnson, got her stage name because “she likes to fart.”
Dean explained, “Whoopee pillows, farts. That’s how Caryn Johnson became Whoopi Goldberg.”
The EGOT winner previously admitted to having the gassy inspiration behind her name in a 2017 “Graham Norton Show” interview.
“The theaters I worked in were so small, they didn’t have much backstage space, so if you were gassy you had to [fart] all the way through,” Goldberg said at the time. “People would say, ‘You’re like a whoopee pillow.’ So that’s what I’ve become.”
While the “Sister Act” star has yet to confirm the elevator story, she’s been “quite supportive” over the years — including her “Claim to Fame” stint.
“At first she didn’t understand that they’re sliding into the DMs and how people do things now,” Dean told the New York Post last month, adding that Goldberg’s endorsement is “always important” to her.
“She kind of thought it was fake and told me to be careful.”
Goldberg, Williams and Crystal had been friends for a long time. Celebrating her birthday in November 2020, Crystal visited the set of “The View” and gave her a throwback photo of the comedian friends.
He told the Goldberg that he looked at the photo “every morning.”
