Most modern computer mice are ergonomic, so you probably don’t think about them. For professional gamers, the size, shape, and performance of a mouse can make or break their job, thus Toronto-based Formify has developed a technique to make personalized mice that fit each user’s hand.
If you’re willing to spend a little more than the cheapest option at Best Buy, you can find high-end mice that allow you to adjust the mouse’s weight, swap buttons with different tactile responses, fine-tune its speed and response through software settings, or even change its physical shape with swappable body panels.
Formify’s mouse matches every user’s hand without scanning, measuring, or even seeing it. Formify’s “machine learning algorithms will then analyze the picture of your hand, taking into account factors such as finger length, width, and hand size to identify the optimal design for your performance mous,” similar to Dr. Scholl’s custom 3D-printed shoe inserts from a few years ago.
For $142–$179 and a photo, Formify will customize a mouse to your hand.
Formify uses HP’s Multi-Jet Fusion (MJF) technology to 3D print bespoke mice by treating a thin layer of resin powder with an inkjet adhesive and fusing it together with heat. The pieces have a slightly rough feel but no extrusion-based layered striations. Five grip textures can be added during printing.
In a high-end performance mouse, function is just as important as form, so Formify uses Kailh GM 8.0 micro switches under the buttons, a 26,000 DPI optical sensor with a tracking speed of 650 inches per second, and a rechargeable battery that lasts over two weeks. Depending on hand size, the mouse weighs 55 grams on average.
Formify’s Kickstarter campaign is seeking $30,000 to bring its personalized mice to market in a month. After shipping to supporters in December, the Formify Mouse will retail for $179. The “Super Early Bird” price is $142.
However, take that anticipated delivery date with a grain of salt for any crowdfunded product, especially ones involving electronics and specialized fabrication. If the Kickstarter is successful, unexpected delays may occur during the manufacturing process, so don’t be startled or furious if you don’t get yours until 2024, later, or never. Unfortunately, it has.
