Cory Wharton’s newborn daughter Maya underwent open-heart surgery on Tuesday after being diagnosed with tricuspid atresia.
The congenital heart disease “occurs when the tricuspid valve of the heart fails to develop,” the 31-year-old “Teen Mom OG” star told his Instagram followers Friday.
“This valve plays a role in the heart’s essential function, which is to pump blood between the lungs and the body,” he continued, noting that the baby is in “the recovery process” from her “successful procedure.”
Wharton and girlfriend Taylor Selfridge’s baby will need another open-heart surgery in four to six months, as well as a third at 3 to 4 years old, the “Challenge” alum added.
For now, Wharton is focusing on “celebrating” his daughter’s success as he visits her daily in the NICU.
“We can’t wait to see your personality blossom, and I can’t wait for you to meet your sisters, they have SOOOO much love for you,” he captioned his caption, referring to daughters Ryder, 5, and Mila, 2. “They’re both going to be great big sisters to you.”
Selfridge, 27, called Maya a “little warrior” in the comments section.
The “Ex on the Beach” alum revealed in a post of her own that the diagnosis came 22 weeks into her pregnancy.
“The past nine days have been a complete rollercoaster for us and the most challenging week I’ve had as a mom yet,” she wrote, thanking her followers in advance for her support.
Selfridge and Wharton, who last posted to Instagram from the hospital on June 1, announced in March that they were expecting their second child together. (He shares his oldest daughter with ex Cheyenne Floyd.)
“Every one of my kids has continued to push me to make me a better man, so I know you’re going to do the same,” Wharton wrote on the maternity shoot photos at the time.
He thanked Selfridge for their growing brood, gushing, “I can’t wait to start this adventure with you and continue building this family.”
