Despite Meghan Markle’s version of the story, the Duchess of Sussex was the one who made Kate Middleton cry during their 2018 bridesmaids fight and not the other way around, a new royal biography claims.
Investigative journalist Tom Bower claims in his book Revenge (according to the Daily Mail) that Middleton “burst into tears” after Markle compared the daughter of the Duchess of Cambridge, Princess Charlotte, “unfavorably to the daughter of her best friend Jessica Mulroney”. Isabel, in a dress that fits for the “Suits” alum’s wedding to Prince Harry.
Bower claims that Markle and Middleton, both now 40, disagreed on the length of Charlotte’s hemline or the fit of her dress. They also reportedly disagreed over whether Markle’s bridesmaids should “wear tights” to the wedding.
The biographer also claims that Mulroney, 42, and Mulroney’s mother “supported” Markle’s “urging” in the feud with Middleton.
Bower’s version of how events unfolded isn’t the first time claims have been made that Markle upset Middleton.
Media outlets previously reported that Markle had made Middleton cry over what Charlotte, now 7, could wear as a flower girl – just days before the former actress was due to walk down the aisle.
Tensions were apparently already high between the Cambridges and the Sussexes by then, and Middleton felt the disagreement was the last straw.
“It was a hot day and apparently there was an argument about whether the bridesmaids should wear tights or not,” a friend of Prince William and Middleton told Tatler Magazine in 2020 after Harry, 37, and Markle resigned from their royal family. duties and moved to the United States. “Kate, according to protocol, felt they should. Meghan didn’t want them to do that.”
However, in a rare move, Kensington Palace released a statement denying that the feud had ever developed, saying Tatler’s article contained “a series of inaccuracies and false misrepresentations”.
The following year, Markle addressed the accusation head-on, claiming during her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey that it was, in fact, Middleton who made her cry.
“The reverse happened,” Markle said, reflecting on the bridal barrage during the March 2020 interview. “Everyone in the institution knew it wasn’t true.”
Markle added that she wasn’t sure why no one from the royal family had directly denied reports of a rift between her and her sister-in-law.
Markle also confirmed that the tiff was about flower girl dresses, saying, “I cried and it really hurt my feelings.
“There was no confrontation,” she insisted. “I don’t think it’s fair to her to go into the details because she’s apologized and I’ve forgiven her.
“It was a really rough week of the wedding and she was upset about something, but she owned it, and she apologized, and she brought me flowers and a note to apologize.”
She called Middleton “a good person” and said she felt the media “really seemed to want a story from a hero and a villain.”
“If you love me, you don’t have to hate her. And if you love her, you don’t have to hate me,” Markle said.
