Warning: Contains Season 3 Spoilers
“Never have I ever” seen so much drama!
Season 2 of “Never Have I Ever” left viewers with the happy ending everyone longed for; Devi and Paxton were officially boyfriend and girlfriend. Sadly, Daxton isn’t meant to be (at least for now), and there’s even a new love interest named Des (played by Anirudh Pisharody).
“Season 3 ends in a way where we don’t know exactly what is happening,” Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, who plays Devi, told Vidak For Congress. “But I was very shocked by all the dramatic turns her love life is taking, be it with the new character Des, or the breakup with Paxton. I was like, ‘Dang!’”
Ramakrishnan said she can identify with Devi to some extent.
“I feel like I relate to her, because her journey is very universal, in the sense of her self-love journey, I can certainly relate to that, because I feel that many people can relate to it because I don’t always have of myself held,” explains the Canadian-born actor.
“I think Devi and I are much more different in personality,” she continued, describing herself as “more chill” because she cared less about her grades in high school. “Devi is much more intense when it comes to school.”
Amazingly, “Never Have I Ever” is Ramakrishnan’s very first role.
She was chosen by co-creator Mindy Kaling from thousands of candidates after she recorded her audition tape at a local library with her mother’s camera.
“I’d like to tell you that I felt I had a chance and that I felt confident,” she explained with a laugh. “That was absolutely not the truth. I really felt like I was doing something for fun, a random video of me would be sent to these random people in LA and they might laugh about it and move on. I didn’t think I had a chance, but I was like, ‘Um, what do I have to lose?’”
Ramakrishnan, who called her a “Cinderella story,” is also well aware of what her role means for Southeast Asian girls.
“To hear so many fans talk about how they feel so represented by the show warms my heart,” she said. “That’s one of my favorite interactions with fans because it should have been this long.”
And whether or not she’s hoping Devi ends up with Paxton in Season 4, fans may be surprised by the answer.
“I hope Devi ends with true self-love and self-respect,” Ramakrishnan replied.
