King Charles III became emotional during the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II on Monday.
The new monarch wiped away tears during the service as he sat with other members of the royal family, including sons Prince William and Prince Harry and wife Queen Consort Camilla.
Prince Edward’s wife, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, was also seen patting her eyes with a tissue, while those around her seemed sad, but remained stoic.
The late Queen’s state funeral took place at Westminster Abbey in London.
Prior to the ceremony, there was a pre-funeral reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla.
It was reported last week that Harry, 38, and Markle, 41, had not been invited to attend that event.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were reportedly informed that only working British royals were welcome.
However, foreign royals and world leaders, including President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron, were invited.
After the state funeral, another more private service will be held in Windsor before the late monarch is buried with her husband Prince Philip, who died in April 2021.
Queen Elizabeth II died in Scotland on September 8 at the age of 96 after months of declining health.
The legendary monarch, who had a historic 70-year reign, struggled with mobility issues after overcoming COVID-19 in February 2020.
In early September, the palace indicated that the queen’s health had deteriorated as she was under “medical supervision”.
After Queen Elizabeth passed away, her son, King Charles III, replaced her as head of the monarchy.
He said in a personal address to the Privy Council: “It is the greatest comfort to me to know of the condolences that so many have shown to my sister and my brothers, and with such overwhelming affection and support we must give our whole family in our loss For all of us as a family.
“My mother’s reign was unparalleled in duration, dedication and devotion. Even as we mourn, we give thanks for this very faithful life. I am well aware of this great legacy and of the duties and heavy responsibilities of sovereignty that have now passed to me.”

He said: “Grandma, although this last goodbye brings us great sadness, I am forever grateful for all our first encounters – from my earliest childhood memories with you, to the first time I met you as my commander in chief, to the first moment you met my dear wife and embraced your beloved great-grandchildren.
“I cherish these moments that I have shared with you, and the many other special moments in between. You are already sorely missed.”
Four days prior to her state funeral, the public were allowed to pay their respects to Her Majesty at Westminster Hall.
