Chrissy Teigen revealed on Thursday that her late son, Jack, died in a “life-saving abortion” and not a miscarriage as she previously shared.
“Two years ago, when I was pregnant with Jack, John and my third child, I had to make many difficult and heartbreaking decisions,” Teigen said at Propper Daley’s “A Day of Unreasonable Conversation” summit (via THR).
“Halfway through it became very clear that he would not survive, and neither would I without medical intervention.”
The Cravings founder, who shares daughter Luna and son Miles with crooner John Legend and is currently pregnant, noted that she had great medical care and a great support system, but only recently realized she had an abortion.
“Let’s just call it what it was: it was an abortion,” said Teigen, 36. “An abortion to save my life for a baby who had absolutely no chance. And to be honest, I never, ever put that together, until a few months ago actually.”
The former model said she “didn’t understand it that way” until the Supreme Court’s quashing of Roe v. Wade. She’d sympathized with the people who’d had to make tough choices when Legend reminded her that she’d been one of them.
“I fell silent and felt weird that I hadn’t understood it that way,” Teigen said. “I told the world we had a miscarriage, the world agreed we had a miscarriage, all the headlines said it was a miscarriage.
“And I got really frustrated that I didn’t say what it was in the first place, and I felt stupid that it had taken me over a year to really understand that we’d had an abortion.”
Teigen and Legend, 43, announced in late September 2020 that they had lost their baby boy in a miscarriage alongside a series of heartbreaking black and white photos taken from their hospital room.
