‘Bros’ star Luke Macfarlane talks about his coming out in 2008

“Bros” actor Luke Macfarlane was more afraid of lying about his sexuality than coming out.

“I think so many of the people I saw were tortured and ruined by the lies they had to tell,” Macfarlane – who came out in 2008 – tells us. “Hollywood is very important, work is very important, but being honest is much more important to me.”

The Canadian-born actor, 42, adds that the irony of helping him cast in his latest film, “Bros,” a gay rom-com starring Billy Eichner, has not escaped his notice.

“It’s funny how careers have their own trajectory,” he said. “I came out almost 17 years ago and I never thought it would actually land me a job, but it turns out it did. I’m lucky Billy was writing at this point in history and a comedian.”

Macfarlane is also a fixture in Hallmark holiday movies, having starred in such films as “Christmas Land,” “Maggie’s Miracle Christmas” and “The Mistletoe Promise.”

“I know my way around a Christmas tree,” he joked before explaining why the channel is so popular.

“People look at Hallmark and Hallmark is successful because there’s a lack of romance in our culture, there’s a lack of love, we’ve become a little bit cynical,” he said. “People watch Hallmark on repeat because they want to see people fall in love and I think we kind of forgot about that.”

“I’m not going to talk about that at all,” he exclaimed. “I give you my performance and you give me my privacy!”
