Britney Spears’ father Jamie Spears has been ordered to sit down for a statement in Los Angeles as part of an investigation into his role as curator, Judge Brenda Penny ruled Wednesday.
The Los Angeles Superior Court judge found that Jamie, 69, was properly served and failed to show up for impeachment.
He was instructed to schedule it for August 12.
Britney Spears’ lawyer Mathew Rosengart has previously criticized Jamie for allegedly “running and hiding” from his own statement and “taking into account his misconduct – under oath – as required by law.”
Meanwhile, Jamie’s team is still pushing for Britney, 40, to be impeached herself.
Jamie’s attorney, Alex Weingarten, argued in a file in June that the “Toxic” singer should be impeached over her “incendiary allegations of various factual matters”, most notably on social media.
Rosengart argued during the hearing on Wednesday that the impeachment of Britney was “retaliatory”.
He also said his client has no knowledge that would be helpful in a deposition because she was the conservator.
The former federal prosecutor added that if Jamie’s team wanted information, he would have to depose his own client or Britney’s former business manager, Lou Taylor.
Rosengart also told Judge Penny Wednesday that allowing Britney to be impeached would only “retraumatize” his client.
The pop star and the conservator’s disgraced legal teams also faced other issues on Wednesday after her conservatorship ended last November, including Jamie’s request to have his legal fees paid through Britney’s estate.
Judge Penny provisionally denied Jamie’s request to impeach Britney over her opposition to pay his legal fees.
After Britney’s 13-year conservatorship ended, Jamie was forced to hire attorney Alex Weingarten because his former legal team dropped him. Rosengart has attempted to investigate him over suspicions that he embezzled money and allegedly spy on his daughter.
According to Variety’s December 2021 report, Jamie’s attorney charges about $1,200 an hour.
Rosengart told Vidak For Congress at the time that the request for legal costs was made after “Mr. Spears plucked many millions of dollars from Britney as a conservator while paying his lawyers millions more, all from Britney’s work and hard-earned money. He added “Under the circumstances, his request is not only legally worthless, it is an abomination.”
At the beginning of the conservatory, Britney’s poor father received a $40,000 loan from her former corporate manager Lou Taylor and her company, Tri Star Sports & Entertainment Group, in 2008.
Taylor’s attorney, Charles Harder, previously said Jamie eventually “paid back” the “small loan”, which Harder said “had no effect on Tri Star’s work on the estate in later years”.
