Britney Spears faces backlash after seemingly body shaming Christina Aguilera’s dancers.
“I wish I could have chosen the nannies for my kids… my dancers… I mean if I had Christina Aguilera’s dancers I would have looked extremely petite 💃💃💃… I mean, why shouldn’t I talk about it?” the superstar, 40, wrote via Instagram on Monday.
Her post was accompanied by a quote attributed to Rodney Dangerfield: “I found there was only one way to look thin: hang out with fat people.”
Spears picked up grievances from her days spent in a conservatory that deprived her of many personal freedoms, going on to say that her self-confidence could have benefited from “[choosing] where I lived, ate, who I called, went out and who I was on stage with!!!”
During the nearly 14-year legal deal signed by her estranged father, Jamie Spears, the singer performed in Las Vegas for four years and embarked on multiple world tours. (She claimed she toured against her will in 2018.)
Meanwhile, Aguilera, 41, went on several tours during Britney’s Sin City run, eventually taking on a residency at Planet Hollywood when her longtime pop rival left.
Fans expressed disappointment at Britney as she compared her dancers’ physique to Aguilera’s.
“Britney… body shaming is out,” wrote one person, with many echoing a similar message.
“Oh dear, delete this now you have time,” one follower urged.
Someone else called Britney “so wrong” for the post, saying, “There’s so much more to life than looking thin.”
Another person added: “This is so f-king offensive Britney.”
Britney – who said in a since-deleted voice memo that she doesn’t mind offending others because she’s felt “offended” all her life – still doesn’t seem to be bothered by any criticism. (“offended 🤷🏼♀️??” she added on Sunday. “Don’t look at me 😝!!!”)
Britney concluded her Monday message by saying: “It’s hard sometimes to see how much of my femininity was taken away at the time and everyone just sat back and said nothing!!! Anyway…I’ll be here to talk about things people NEVER talked about 🙄🙄🙄!!!”
Britney previously complained of being the “tough girl” on stage, saying it was “not fun” and quite “humiliating” in a March Instagram post.
This isn’t the first time Britney has mentioned Aguilera via social media either. In November, she dragged her former “All New Mickey Mouse Club” co-star with her for keeping quiet about her conservatorship battle.
“I love and adore everyone who supported me… but refusing to speak when you know the truth is tantamount to a lie!!!” Britney wrote a clip of Aguilera’s red carpet turning down the 2021 Latin Grammy Awards the night before.
“13 years in a corrupt abuse system, but why is such a difficult subject for people to talk about???” she continued. “I’m the one who went through it!!! Thank you to all the supporters who spoke and supported me… Yes, I matter!”
Aguilera had been asked by reporters at the awards ceremony if she had “any communication” with Britney in the days after the conservatory ended.
Aguilera’s publicist, Brett Ruttenberg, who accompanied her to the event, was quick to intercept, “No, I’m sorry, we’re not doing that tonight, but thanks, bye!”
“I can’t,” Aguilera said as she walked away, adding, “But I’m happy for her!”
In January, two months after Britney’s conservatory ended, Aguilera shared public support for the ‘Crossroads’ actress.
“I’ll just say what makes me feel good, as I’ve said and said before, that I couldn’t be happier for her,” Aguilera told media personality Enrique Santos while promoting her Spanish EP, “La Fuerza.” .
“Every woman deserves to feel empowered and own that for herself as she sees fit.”
