Anna Wintour, who seems to have picked up a few tricks after hosting the Met Gala for years, sure knows how to throw a party.
A source tells us that the formidable Vogue editor gave an intimate, star-studded bash Sunday night for the 60th birthday of her close friend, “Elvis” director Baz Luhrmann.
Hugh Jackman, Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz, Mark Ronson and wife Grace Gummer, designer Zac Posen, theater producer Jordan Roth and Wintour’s daughter Bee Shaffer Carrozzini were spotted rubbing their elbows at the chic piano bar The Nines. It was also something of a “Romeo + Juliet” reunion, as Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio, who played the star-crossed lovers in Luhrmann’s 1996 adaptation, were both there to celebrate.
DiCaprio made the rounds amid news that he is dating model Gigi Hadid. He left the Nines in a flurry of paparazzi lights and later appeared at the afterparty of the ‘Amsterdam’ premiere in Zero Bond, we are told.
Broadway singers and performers stepped into the microphone to sing a number of songs from Luhrmann’s cult classic “Moulin Rouge,” including the hit song “Lady Marmalade.” The film was turned into a musical in 2018 and is currently playing at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
Wintour, who is usually sternly seen from behind her sunglasses, was seen front and center smiling and dancing with Florence and the Machine frontwoman Florence Welch to a rendition of the tune, “Elephant Love Medley” from the film.
Luhrmann was presented with a pie full of starlets in front of guests including playwright Jeremy O. Harris, TikTok star Addison Rae, Derek Blasberg and Maureen Dowd of the New York Times and her former assistant turned-New-York magazine writer, Shawn McCreesh. .
Luhrmann told the Wall Street Journal that he and Wintour met when he was halfway through 2001’s “Moulin Rouge” and already ran into bad press, but that Wintour helped him by putting the movie star, Nicole Kidman, on the cover of Vogue. The pair have been friends ever since and he chairs the Met Gala.
Wintour has just finished hosting the successful Vogue World – a fashion extravaganza and runway show – in the Meatpacking District, which featured the likes of Kanye West, Serena Williams and Lil Nas X.
Perhaps the editor, who is known for his icy demeanor, is starting to get a little warm. Sources at that event, in which she was photographed with a beaming smile, told us: “She was bobbing in her chair when [Lil Nas X] executed.”
