Billy Eichner thinks straight people are responsible for his gay rom-com that flopped at the box office over its opening weekend.
The comedian, who co-wrote, executive produced and starred in “Bros,” wrote a long Twitter thread on Sunday in response to the film grossing just $4.8 million in the US and Canada, about 40 percent less than expected.
“Even with rave reviews, great Rotten Tomatoes scores, an A CinemaScore, etc., straight people, especially in certain parts of the country, just didn’t show up for Bros. And that’s disappointing, but it is what it is,” Eichner, 44 , wrote, adding, “Unfortunately, that’s just the world we live in.”
The moviegoer urged moviegoers to see “Bros,” which has been marketed as the first movie with an all-LGBTQIA+ cast to get a wide release. this evening! You will love it! And it *is* special and uniquely powerful to see this particular story on the big screen, especially for queer people who don’t get this opportunity very often. I love this movie so much. GO BROTHERS!!!”
“Bros,” which had a production budget of $22 million, landed fourth at the box office, behind “Smile” ($22 million), “Don’t Worry Darling” ($7.3 million) and “The Woman King” ($7) million).
Despite the disappointing debut, Eichner insisted audiences love the film, which also stars Luke Macfarlane, Ts Madison and Monica Raymund.
“Last night I snuck in and sat in the back of a sold out theater with ‘Bros’ in LA,” he began the same Twitter thread.
“The audience cried with laughter from start to finish, bursting into applause at the end and some wiped their tears as they walked out. It was truly magical. Really. I am VERY proud of this movie.”
The “Parks and Recreation” alum has previously joked to Vidak For Congress that he was “f-king” his handsome co-star Macfarlane, 42, in real life and that the sex was “amazing.”
“We spent a lot of time together, and we still like each other… we don’t go out,” he said at the New York City premiere of the Nicholas Stoller Helmet film.
“It’s very ‘Don’t worry, honey,'” he joked, referring to director Olivia Wilde’s relationship with Harry Styles, the star of her film, whom she met on the set of their psychological thriller.
