Lena Dunham faces major backlash after publicly stating that she wants her coffin wheeled into the New York City Pride Parade when she dies.
“When I go, I want my coffin wheeled through the NYC pride parade with a plaque that reads ‘she wasn’t for everyone, but she *was* for us,'” the 36-year-old ‘Girls’ alumnus, tweeted Sunday, asking, “Who can arrange it?”
Several outraged Twitter users flooded the post with messages of confusion and criticism of her wish.
“Maybe they should drive your coffin around on a bus, like the one you threw LGBTQIA sex workers under,” one person tweeted, referring to the time Dunham said she was against the decriminalization of sex work.
“girl, no. we’re not claiming you’re like that,” an angry member of the LGBTQIA+ community wrote.
A third hatched the actress for “centering” herself on marginalized people, even in death,” adding, “I wouldn’t expect anything better from you. .”
“I think the point of the parade should actually be more about LGBTQ pride than about Lena Dunham. This could be a good idea if there was a Lena Dunham parade,’ another one reasoned.
“You’re basically ahead of no one except older millennials who keep getting kicked out of social spaces for defamation,” another Twitter user arguedwith a fellow netizen to write“Pride for us is not satisfying the egos of straight people who see us as accessories.”
Meanwhile, others came to Dunham’s defense, arguing that she has been a voice for the queer community for years.
“The Voice of a Generation”, a supporter struck.
“I see that the only people who follow Lena hate her – which I’m still trying to figure out on Twitter – do we only follow people we don’t like so we can post angry tweets? anyway, as a female gay man, will I take every ally I can find (and for those who are looking, there aren’t many),” another wrote.
Dunham has long been a supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community and even shared how happy she was when her sister, Grace Dunham, came out in 2014.
“I have always felt a strong and emotional connection with members of the LGBTQ community. It was actually a huge disappointment for me when I came of age and realized I was sexually attracted to men,” Lena said at the time.
“So when my sister came out, I thought, ‘Thank God, now someone in this family can really represent my beliefs and passions.'”
Lena is married to musician Luis Felber. She previously dated producer Jack Antonoff for five years before breaking up in December 2017.
